The frenulum (or frenum) is a small band of tissue located beneath your tongue—and you also have one under your upper lip. Having a frenulum is perfectly normal. But sometimes, it can be “tied.”

When the tissue under the tongue is unusually short or tight, it can limit how well the tongue moves. This restriction can affect swallowing, speech development, and breathing. For babies, a tight frenulum may make breastfeeding difficult. For children, it can cause trouble with speech sounds and even lead to breathing issues like mouth breathing during sleep.
